Every year ‘World Cancer Day’ is celebrated on 4th Febraury at our Sahayta Cancer Kendra, Sector 15 B,Chandigarh where our esteemed donors in the memory of their loved ones give one time help  to each cancer patient/family referred by Hospital Volunteers.Neelu Tuli award of Rs.20,000,Gagan Toor Award of Rs.10,000,Col. I.S. Loomba Protsahan Award of Rs.10,000,Jeevan Sahara Awards of Rs.10,000 are given this day. All Sahayta volunteers,donors and the donees attend the program with full zeal. An Approximate amount of Rs.2,50,000 is distributed among 20-25 patients.

World Cancer Day 

Sahayta celebrates this day on 2nd Saturday of February every year to salute all the brave warriors of cancer as survival for them is a ‘Celebration of Life’.In 1998,Survivors’ Day was celebrated in Chandigarh for the first time with the message that there is life after cancer and it is meaningful. Sahayta presents a well-coordinated show at one of the reputed auditoriums of the city featuring dance programmes by young survivors,ramp walk or a play enacted by  Sahayta survivors. Sahayta Annual Report is presented by our President Renu Saigal.Mementos are given to honour many of our supporters and donors of the year. Sahayta instituted ‘Jeevan Shakti Award’ and ’Bal Jeevan Shakti Award’which includes a memento and cash prize of Rs.10,000 for two survivors who have braved the disease to lead a meaningful life and thus can inspire others to fight cancer.

All over the world  31st May is celebrated as No Tobacco Day to make children aware of the harmful effects of tobacco. Sahayta organizes inter-school poster making competition, slogan competition, declamation contest to catch the students at a young age. Sahayta started celebrating this day in 2008 and since then St.Stephen’s School has been hosting the show for us. Around 60 schools of the Tricity participate to make the show a great success. We firmly believe “Teach them when they are young and growing”.In 2020-21,due to COVID-19 lockdowns and closure of schools,Online Inter-School Poster Making and Declamation Contest on “Tobacco Increases Risk Of Covid-19 and Cancer’” were held.The DEO of Chandigarh Administration wholeheartedly supports the events. Wonderful participation was seen amongst the different categories. Around 150 entries from various private and government schools of Tricity were received. Online Quizes on tobacco related topics were held.

October all over the world is marked as an annual international health campaign for Breast Cancer awareness and is termed as Pink October, hoping for all women to be in pink of health through awareness and early diagnosis. In 2005,Breast Cancer Walk was organized for the first time in Chandigarh by Sahayta. Every year, new set of people and organizations like Pink Chain of Hope, Rotary Chandigarh Midtown, NCC cadets from Army, Air Force and Navy Wings, NSS, Chandigarh Senior Citizens’ Association, ladies from RDOWWA(Retired Defence Officers Wives Welfare Association),Inner Wheel Club, SBI Ladies Club, teachers from various schools join us. Pink looped ribbon, an internationally recognized symbol for breast cancer is given to everyone. People buy pink ribbons to honour women living with breast cancer, remember those lost to the disease and at the same time support research for the cure. In 2015,Pink Chain of Hope-a group of 8 ladies, arranged a grand walkathon in Sukhna Lake and raised Rs.13 Lakhs for chemotherapy of ladies suffering from breast and cervical cancer. In 2016,Pink Chain of Hope organized a high decibel fashion show, Pink Catwalk and Charity Dinner in aid of Sahayta where our survivors joined the professional models on the ramp. In 2018,Rotary Club Midtown in association with Sahayta and INIFD organized another Fashion Walk.

Pink Walk

Sahayta Bal Cancer Sahyog endeavours to support, love and care for the destitute and less privileged cancer patients. It is our sincere effort to organize a number of events to uplift the spirits of these children afflicted with cancer. Sahayta ensures every year that the children undergoing treatment during festival time do not miss the fun and frolic. With the valued guidance, support and cooperation of APC,PGI doctors and staff we conduct many workshops like card making, painting competition, puppet show throughout the year. Children look forward and wait for these events and celebrations with great enthusiasm.

APC Events

This is the first event celebrated in the month of January to celebrate the resilience and spirit of young survivors. We celebrate the day in the playroom of APC, PGI. Nearly 100 children and their parents attend the event. Fun games and art and craft activities help the brave survivors to show their immense talent and interest.The day is well spent and enjoyed by the young children. Refreshments and gifts are given at the end of the event.

Rakhi

Sahayta ensures that the brother-sister bond is always cherished by celebrating and distributing Rakhis along with gifts to young patients in OPD and the wards, nearly 100 children participate.

Festival of light and hope is celebrated by Sahayta for the children in APC. Decorations are put up before the Diwali week and on the Friday preceding Diwali, all the children in the Paediatric Oncology OPD are wished. Gifts are distributed to the patients. Rangolis are made. Refreshments are given. Sometimes dance workshops are organized too. It is a treat to watch the kids jive and dance to different beats, totally oblivious of the pain and discomfort of the disease.

The Playroom in APC,PGI is well decorated with a XMAS Tree and other Xmas decorations made by the children.The children sing carols and dance.It is a reward to see the kids smile watching Santa Claus distribute gifts to the young patients admitted in the wards.
